What Is an M4B File?

M4B is the standard file format for audiobooks. Technically it's an MPEG-4 audio container, from the same family as the M4A files music comes in, with three additions that matter for books: embedded chapter markers, an audiobook media type, and bookmarkable playback. If you've ever bought an audiobook outside of a streaming app, it was very likely an M4B.
What's inside an M4B file
- AAC audio: efficient modern compression. Spoken word at good quality runs roughly 25–35 MB per listening hour, so a 12-hour book fits in a few hundred megabytes.
- Chapter atoms: a list of named timestamps baked into the file. Your player reads them and shows “Chapter 14: The Siege” instead of a bare progress bar.
- Metadata: title, author, and cover art, so the file shows up properly in a library instead of as “output_final_v2”.
- An audiobook media type: a flag telling software this is a book. It's why Apple Books shelves M4Bs under Audiobooks, why your position is remembered when you stop, and why chapter 7 of your novel won't appear when you shuffle your music.

This is why a converted ebook delivered as a single MP3 is so unpleasant: ten hours of audio, no chapters, no resume, sorted into your music. The format, not the audio quality, is the difference between “a TTS recording” and “an audiobook”.
What plays M4B files

Where M4B files come from
- DRM-free audiobook stores and publishers (and Audible rips of books you own, where legal).
- Tools like Audiobook Builder that join CD rips or MP3s into a chaptered M4B.

One honest caveat
The .m4b extension doesn't guarantee chapters; it only enables them. A lazy conversion can produce a chapterless M4B, which is just an MP3 wearing a nicer jacket. If chapters matter to you (for book-length audio, they should), check that whatever tool you use actually writes them.
